Introduction

A school in your town that used to be considered a reasonable one is fast losing its good reputation and student numbers are falling as a result. Parents as well as pupils are complaining that the teaching at the school is very one-sided and boring. Furthermore, they have evidence to show that teachers do not differentiate enough between the learning styles and ways of working of the pupils.

The headmaster has recently retired and a new headmistress has been appointed. She is keen to do something about the problem and has in the past few months read about and been to conference presentations on Multiple Intelligence (MI) Theory. After consultation with her staff and an intake with Intelligentsia - an external in-service teacher training bureau which specialises in working with schools on applying MI theory to education - she has decided to work with her teachers on the problem. The teachers have never heard of MI theory. Because of her enthusiasm, she has also managed to obtain funding for the project from a sponsor.

You have just started working as an adviser for Intelligentsia. A large team of trainers will be working on the whole project. You are part of a small and rather inexperienced team which has been chosen to advise particularly on the subject(s) which you teach. Luckily, Intelligentsia has a lot of experience in working with MI theory in schools and senior advisers have written training materials to (a) help teachers and new colleagues discover their own intelligences, (b) understand the applications of MI to education and (c) design lesson plans. You are welcome to download, print and use these.
